WHAT IS COMPRESSION SET?


“Compression set” is property of the material and hence the yarn and that of gland packing by which it refuses to recover back to its original shape after the applied pressure / force is removed. All materials and the packings made from it suffer from “compression set”. Compression set is the culprit that prevents the pressure transfer from one packing ring to another, inside the stuffing box. Almost all gland packings on offer in the market irrespective of what material of construction, country of origin, brand; all suffer with compression set and hence badly scores the sleeves and cause excessive friction to the shaft movement.

 

WHY LOW / ZERO COMPRESSION PATENTED REINFORCED YARN GLAND PACKING?

 

Difficulties Associated With Compression Gland Packing

As illustrated above, the outer two rings are over compressed & densified. They grab the shaft leading to excess heat generation, resulting in scoring of the sleeve. WHY REINFORCEMENT IS REQUIRED?


Reinforcement in of yarn with help of a unique process (that results in a unique shape in braided packing) creates property of recuperation in the yarn. This recuperation as against the compression set is the key quality imparted to yarn by Stoplik researchers after a decade of R. & D.

 

WHAT IS RECUPERATION? WHY IS IT REQUIRED?


Recuperation is the key to success of our innovative gland packings. Its due to recuperation in the gland packing that our packings allow an efficient pressure transfer from gland follower to the last ring next to neck bushing in the stuffing box. Thus whole labyrinth participates in leakage prevention and excessive tightening of gland follower in not necessary. This way the local scoring near the gland follower end is effectively arrested.

 

Advantages of Patented Reinforced Yarn Gland Packing

  • Individual Yarn is reinforced which provides enhanced recuperation to the gland packing.
  • Due to recuperation the pressure transfer is almost equal.
  • The sealing starts from innermost ring with bare minimum gland pressure.

As illustrated the above packing does not grab the shaft and does not solidify. The packing rings do not harden in
service. The packing material is self lubricating, has extremely low coefficient of friction and exhibits excellent heat transfer characteristics. This results in unbelievable sealing performance.

SOLUTIONS FOR SCORED SHAFT/SLEEVE?


While the score sleeves and shafts must be replaced with mirror finished new sleeves immediately in practice there are situation where a shut down is not possible. In such circumstances Stoplik Insitu mold comes very handy. When sandwiched over the scored area, insitu mold make a ring in the shape of the contour of the sleeve and hence blocking any scope for leakage. Characteristics of In-Situ Mold : 

It flows in scored / shaft / stem and reduces wear. Regardless of size and shape of the stuffing box it forms itself to the configuration of the stuffing box by remolding itself. In-Situ Mold eliminates the need for stocking various sizes and types of gland packing. In-Situ Mold is highly recommended for application where equipment shut down causes critical conditions. ADDITING OF GLAND PACKING RINGS AND TIGHTENING OF GLANDS.

This is the common practice and regular feature with conventional compression packing. Since the packing rings suffer from compression set the total volume gets reduced requiring additional packing ring or tightening to fill the gap. Once the sleeve gets scored it crates its own additional volume to be filled. More scoring develops sharp edges on the sleeve that cut and spoils the packing ring requiring frequent replacement and tightening. The solution to over come this vicious cycle for ever is to go for Stoplik Gland Packing.

Insitu mold Packings of Stoplik are supplied in standard sized stick form. These can be used for shaft / sleeves of any size, being moldable packing of interlocked fibers.
